Johnny Magee

Residency at MIRIAD

Self Portrait 1990. I quite like this image I took of myself 16 years ago..., the mirror being a sort of 'reflective' time machine! .... more likely I'm in denial of being 49 next birthday.

It all began while studying Fine Art Sheffield, 1987, where I developed an interest in 'Institutions' .... and so my practice started to emerge around the field of documentation using film, photography, video and new media. I spent some time in a Sheffield Hospital Laundry, where I documented the work of the Laundry workers using a 'fine art' photography approach.

The exhibition which followed the laundry work set me on my way.... so I next began a four year project with the South Yorkshire Police, which culminated in an Exhibition and Book: ON DOG HAIR AND SAND

I have worked within large institutions, including: Hospitals, Police, Orchestras, Business Community, Educational Institutions. My approach to documentaion usually involves ‘visualising institutions’.

As well as being Documentation Artist for HAT, my current position is working full time as Associate Artist for Arts Council England where I am working within their Research & Development area.
